Congratulations on your election to an EMC board, and thank you for being willing to serve the churches of the EMC in this significant role. On this page, you will find information about the EMC and about how to be a good board member.

In order to orient yourself to the board you have been elected to, please read through your board’s handbook, which you find linked below. The director assigned to your board will connect with you personally to bring you up to speed and prepare you for your first board meeting.

General Board (GB)

HANDBOOK

  • The General Board is the legal governing board of the EMC. The Moderator and Vice-moderator are elected by the Conference Council delegates to two-year terms. The Moderator chairs the General Board and the Conference Council meetings. The Vice-moderator provides continuity in the absence of the Moderator.

    Each of the nine regions elects a member to serve on the General Board as well. The chairpersons of four other boards are also members of the General Board.

    The General Board has overall responsibility for the ministries of EMC, and is accountable to the Conference Council for developing strategy and directing the affairs of the EMC.

Board of Leadership and Outreach (BLO)

HANDBOOK

  • The Board of Leadership and Outreach (BLO) serves as the executive for the EMC Ministerial. The BLO has overall responsibility for theological matters and social concerns. It also facilitates the recruitment, development and oversight of EMC ministers and pastors.

Board of Missions (BOM)

HANDBOOK

  • The Board of Missions (BOM) gives oversight to the EMC Missions program. EMC Administered Missions are those fields directly supervised by the BOM. The BOM also relates to EMC Associate Missionaries who work under the supervision of Partner Agencies.

Board of Church Ministries (BCM)

HANDBOOK

  • The Board of Church Ministries (BCM) provides resources and services to help congregations with Christian education, family life teaching, music ministries and youth work. The BCM also administers the EMC Archives.

Board of Trustees (BOT)

HANDBOOK

  • The Board of Trustees (BOT) gives oversight to EMC finances and facilities. The BOT promotes stewardship for EMC ministries and is accountable to the Conference Council for financial matters.

Church Planting Task Force (CPTF)

  • The Church Planting Task Force (CPTF) is a sub-committee of the BLO that gives direction and supervision to the ministry of church planting in Canada.

National Youth Committee (NYC)

  • The National Youth Committee (NYC) is a sub-committee of the BCM that coordinates national youth events and the development and encouragement of youth workers.
